January
Dunnotar Castle, Stonehaven
Waking to a rare occurrence of heavy drifting snow on a morning in mid January, I knew I had to make the most of the conditions. Being coastal, we don’t get much of the white stuff, so for me, there is something magical about the juxtaposition of sea against snow. Arriving at Dunnottar Castle at the first light of a winter’s day, the views were something out of a Christmas postcard. What caught my attention however was the sastrugi (wind carved snow formations) decorating the frozen cliff tops. These felt so out of place, as I normally associate them with snowy mountains. I did though jump at the chance to use them as sweeping lines to lead the eyes through the scene, to the frozen fortress, that was now basking in the golden light of a new day.
