November

Stonehaven War Memorial

Just before sunset on a Thursday evening in mid October, my phone pinged with an Aurora Alert. The app was showing a red warning, indicating that a strong geomagnetic storm was in progress. I waited until dusk and stuck my head out of the back door. To my astonishment, the sky was glowing a faint red with pillars of light visibly moving across the sky. I knew this would be the best display I had ever seen - having missed the huge display of the Northern Lights back in May. I grabbed my camera and headed to nearby Dunnottar Castle - along with what seemed like half of Stonehaven - to get some images of the Aurora Borealis dancing above the fortress. Happy with what I had got at that location I moved up to the coast to the much quieter Stonehaven War Memorial. Here the display seemed to intensify, with the centre of the coronal mass ejection’s (CME’s) entry point directly overhead. I illuminated the stone memorial from the base with my head-torch and with a five second exposure, captured this ethereal image, which I feel is fitting for the month of November.
